“Vices are sometimes only virtues carried to excess!” -Charles Dickens

In today’s (first world) life, excess has become the norm. But that’s nothing new. What is new is that Starbucks has put out a new drink size called the “Trinta,” which, aside from being Starbucksy-pseudo-Italian for “Trenta,” is nearly a quarter gallon of cream and sugar (and maybe a little coffee.) Yes, I realize this article is nearly two months old, but I don’t go to Starbucks very often.

But I mean seriously, thirty ounces? I know we’re a “more is always better” culture, but we’re in the realm of Big Gulp Starbucks here.

Totally reasonable.

In case you somehow missed the memo, caffeine is a stimulant that causes addiction. You get headaches if you stop drinking it regularly, which is called withdrawal. I’m not here to demonize coffee or tea, and hell I’m an addict myself. But if you need a bucket full of whipped cream and high-fructose corn syrup to get up in the morning, you are probably harming yourself just as much as someone who smokes cigarettes. Just because you’re harming yourself in a different way doesn’t mean that it’s better.

“Didn’t you have one of these the other morning, Sam?”

What? No! I mean, yes, but that’s not…

Ugh, fine. I’ll get off my high horse. Portion control and second helpings are not my strong point. But I’m trying to do better. Which is what this is all about, I guess.

So really, join me? Don’t buy two cheeseburgers, or a bigger drink. Try not to buy fast food at all, really. I know it’s hard to stop yourself, to say no. Trust me, I know. My gut speaks for itself. And it says “more cookies!” But that cookie won’t make me feel any better.

  1. I actually felt unhealthy for having fast food 4 times last year (2013). And I once went a whole year without eating fast food from August 2009 to 2010. Not that I avoid the stuff; I’m just not in the habit of eating that type of avoid. I DO, however, avoid caffeine. I don’t need any stimulants screwing with my sleeping schedule!
